Before you Start:

Tax File Number:

When working in Australia you need to have a tax file number. It’s free and can be applied on line at www.ato.gov.au. It usually takes 2-3 weeks to get your tax file number so try and apply as soon as you arrive in Australia. It’s also a legal requirement for all employers to pay you superannuation. The good new is all overseas workers can get most of their tax and superannuation back when you leave Australia. Mobile Phones:

Its important when you are in Australia that you can be contacted by either family, friends or employers. Pre paid mobile phones are cheap and a great way to get a mobile phone to use in Australia. There are many other backpackers selling their old phones or many of the mobile phone company's selling cheap phones with starter kits.  Common mobile phone companies include Vodaphone, Teletra, Optus, Virgin, 3, and Orange.

Medical cover:

In Australia we are lucky to have free health cover. If you are from the UK, Ireland, Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Italy, Malta, Norway or New Zealand then you can apply for a Medicare card. A Medicare card allows free access to emergency treatment from public hospitals and medical treatment from doctors. It’s free to get a Medicare card and you can apply on line at www.mediciareaustralia.gov.au
